When we talk about connected mobility we usually mention autonomous cars and in-vehicle connectivity, but connected mobility is not going to depend exclusively on vehicles.

Connected mobility requires an adaptation of infrastructures because if the technology is in the infrastructures, connected mobility will be able to reach everyone, regardless of the vehicle they have.

The technology needed for the roads of the future

For connected mobility to work, technology is needed:

  1. 5G to guarantee speed and quality of connection. 5G and CV2X connectivity will enable data capture, GPS mapping and improved positioning to implement safety services in vehicles.
  2. Internet of Things (IoT) to receive and broadcast connection signals for further processing.
  3. Artificial intelligence and dynamic management to make measurements and even future predictions to optimize infrastructure use.

What is missing now to make connected corridors a reality?

As part of this evolution towards connected corridors, Ferrovial has announced the creation of Aivia Orchestrated Connected Corridors together with Microsoft, 3M and Kapsch TrafficCom. Aivia is a 5G smart road development initiative and advanced management, sensing and simulation technology. The project includes road infrastructure technologies to improve the traveler experience through safety, reliable travel times or even in-vehicle access to infotainment.

But we must not forget that we start from an indisputable premise: autonomous and conventional vehicles will have to coexist for a long time to come.

Phase 1: 2020-2022

Improve the physical infrastructure of the different corridors, fine-tune corridor connectivity and track sensorization.

Phase 2: 2022-2026

There will already be autonomous vehicles incorporating all the advances but the intention is that the rest of the conventional vehicles will also have basic technology that allows them to connect to the infrastructure.

Phase 3: 2026 en adelante

It will be possible to manage traffic dynamically and orchestrated for all vehicles in urban and intercity domains maximizing network capacity, fluidity and flexibility, thereby helping to reduce congestion and emissions.
